Vecsernyes and Makra deliver gold medal performances for host nation at Szombathely World Cup

The Hungarian city of Szombathely hosted a stage in the World Challenge Cup series in Artistic Gymnastics last weekend.

Several of Europe’s top gymnasts participated, testing their competitions readiness ahead of the World Championships that will start on 4 October in Stuttgart (GER). Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat won floor ahead of the Ukrainian duo Oleg Verniaiev and Petro Pakhniuk. Great Britain’s Joshua Nathan claimed the pommel horse title, keeping off Verniaiev and Slovenia’s Saso Bertoncelj. A first World Cup victory for the talented Brit who said afterwards:

I felt very nervous, but I knew if I just do the routine I’ve done in the training gym so many times I have good shot at maybe a medal. I just wanted to do as good as a routine as I possibly could that was my main focus of today.

On rings, Igor Radivilov (UKR) debuted a new programme after a period of rest, immediately returning to the top of the podium. Egypt’s Ali Zahran took the silver ahead of Austria’s Vinzenz Hoeck. After two silver medals, Verniaiev aced his parallel bars routine for the gold, holding off European silver medallist Pakhniuk and Bulgaria’s Yordan Aleksandrov. The host nation was victorious in the last final with European medallist David Vecsernyes:

The participants of the high bar final were very strong. I started which I liked the most. I earned high points with my routine as I made only small mistakes but I could still win the competition. I got almost 14 points in the final, I got higher points than in the qualifications.

In the women’s competition, Marina Nekrasova (AZE) narrowly edged European Games Champion Teja Belak (SLO) with Angelina Radivilova (UKR) earning the bronze medal. South Africa’s Caitlin Rooskrantz won the bars crown. Phoebe Jakubczyk (GBR) claimed the silver and Spain’s Roxana Popa delivered a successful comeback from injury by winning the bronze. Hungary’s Noemi Makra also returned to competition following injury and celebrated with the gold medal on beam:

To be honest I wouldn’t think but I am so happy to win on the balance beam here at the Grand Prix. I’m happy also because the last time I did that was 5 years ago. The past one, one and a half year was really tough for me because I came back from a longer injury so I’m really really happy to win. The atmosphere was amazing in the Arena, it was good to come back and to compete in Szombathely.

The floor gold went to Spain’s Marina Gonzalez, silver to Emily Thomas (GBR) and Angelina Radivilova (UKR) claimed her second medal in third place.
