Several European countries sent gymnasts to compete at the first World Cup stage of the year, in the Australian city of Melbourne.
2007 European all-around champion Vanessa Ferrari (ITA) made her return to competition after tearing her Achilles' tendon at the 2017 World Championships. The 28-year-old showed off great skills including a double layout, to claim the gold medal on floor, more than a full point ahead of her rivals. The second European victory was for Ukraine’s Igor Radivilov who nicely landed two huge vaults: a Dragulescu and a Tsukahara double pike. He was joined on the podium by France’s Loris Frasca (silver) and Great Britain’s Dominick Cunningham who picked up his second bronze medal of the competition after tying Spain’s Rayderley Zapata on floor earlier on. Turkish teammates Ahmet Onder and Ferhat Arican both medalled on parallel bars, earning silver and bronze respectively.
A spectacular high bar final concluded the meet with Japan’s Hidetaka Miyachi and 2018 World Champion Epke Zonderland (NED) posting the same score for their dare-devil routines. A tie-breaker based on the higher execution score bumped Zonderland to second place.
