Ukraine had a wonderful weekend in Cottbus at the first of four 2020 World Cup series counting towards the Olympic qualifying system. Igor Radivilov won vault, Oleg Verniaiev claimed victory on parallel bars and Anastasia Bachynska clinched the gold on floor. While the men qualified a full team to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the women didn’t. Diana Varinska qualified via her all-around ranking leaving European Games floor winner Bachynska to fight for her entry ticket on the World Cup circuit or 2020 Europeans. With her win on floor, Bachynska scored valuable points. Italy’s Lara Mori also has her sights set on securing her Tokyo participation via her best event floor. She finished third in Cottbus, a tenth behind Germany’s Kim Bui.
Greek rings master Eleftherios Petrounias, who recently became a father to baby Sofia with Vasiliki Millousi, claimed the silver behind China’s Yang Liu but ahead of Armenia’s Artur Avetisyan. Both Petrounias and Avetisyan missed an Olympic spot at the Stuttgart World Championships and need the World Cup series victory to compete in Tokyo.
