2 days after the Opening Ceremony of the 17th edition of the summer European Youth Olympic Festival, the Slovenian town of Maribor kicked off the gymnastics competition.
In an action-packed day, 92 boys from 35 countries competed in the qualification rounds. A lot was at stake as the scores posted today determined both the all-around and team ranking, in addition to the apparatus and mixed team finals qualifiers.
In the first of 3 subdivisions, the British team featuring Alex Niscoveanu, Jonas Rushworth and Sol Scott set a high standard, scoring over 25 points on each event, with the top two scores counting towards the team total. With 159.250, the British lads proved unbeatable, taking the team gold home with them. In the all-around, Jonas Rushworth led with 79.250 after subdivision 1 In the last subdivision, Tommaso Brugnami, Italy’s experienced competitor who already earned the titles of EYOF, junior European and World Champion at the tender age of 16, delivered his ultimate best. Highlighted by the top scores on floor and on vault, Brugnami totalled 79.750 to overtake Rushworth for the gold medal. Great Britain’s Alex Niscoveanu and Armenia’s Mamikon Khachatryan battled for bronze, with the young Brit mounting the podium. Sergio David Kovacs Molcut (ESP), Manuel Berettera (ITA), Mert Oeztuerk and Jonas Eder (GER) round out the top 8.
In the team competition, defending Champions Italy found hard to catch up with the British team. To no avail this time, as they settled for silver instead. Armenia and France were both in the running for bronze. Just one tenth separated them, with Armenia going in front of their rivals. Germany, Spain, Hungary and Netherlands place 5th through to 8th in the team rankings.
Congratulations to the medallists!
