Welcome to the 17th edition of the TeamGym Newsletter!
We are in the first semester of 2024, and the busy national competition season is just around the corner. Preparations for the Open European Championships in Baku are also in full swing.
April is the start of the European Championships season, moving across Europe from Trampoline in Guimaraes (POR), via Rimini (ITA), Budapest (HUN) and ending in Baku (AZE) for our TeamGym event.
Azerbaijan will be the 14th country to host European Championships in TeamGym since the start of these competitions in 1996. The event in Baku will be our 8th official European Championships.
Let's take a quick look back at the first quarter of this year.
In the first weekend of January, 106 participants travelled from 14 European countries to Malmö in southern Sweden to take part in the International TeamGym Conference.
The conference included both practical and theoretical sessions across two pathways for delegates, i.e.
- Performance Pathway: targeting high performance level coaches and judges
- Strategic Pathway: targeting administrators and governing bodies
From Friday 5 to Sunday 7 January 2024, participants could choose from a number of parallel sessions and 21 different topics. The theoretical sessions included case studies of national programmes, performance planning, injury prevention, social media, modernisation of the judging, as well a virtual input from Elevien.
Practical input was received from TeamGym apparatus experts Anders Frisk (SWE) for Floor and Jacob Melin (SWE) for Trampet. For Tumble an opportunity was taken for cross education to enrich the discipline with input from GBR Power Tumbling coach Mikey Barnes.
Injury prevention was a central theme throughout the conference, engaging doctors, physiotherapists, and sport scientists to inform on best practice. This topic will remain on the agenda for years to come, with more research and further steps to embed more effective injury prevention into all aspects and levels of the sport.
The conference provided an excellent opportunity for networking and collaboration between federations and enabled the Technical Committee to engage and consult with the TeamGym community. The discussions during and after the various presentations made for stimulating conversations that have set the tone for an optimistic and motivating start to the new year.
The importance of social media visibility is growing as TeamGym develops in Europe and expands to other continents.
Our aim is now to make TeamGym even more visible by gathering information on a single Instagram page and sharing what is happening throughout Europe and worldwide. The primary objective is to expand the TeamGym following, introduce TeamGym to new groups, break down barriers in TeamGym promotion and expand TeamGym activity around the world.
In February, we contacted all National Federations developing TeamGym to ask for help providing points of contact and supplying material for the upcoming TeamGym Instagram page ‘teamgym4all’.
To express your interest and receive further information please provide your contact details by filling out this Google form. The plan is to start up the page in early May 2024.
This year’s Open European Championships will take place from 16 to 19 October in Baku (AZE).
A mix of oil-driven development and ancient cultures characterises Azerbaijan's capital. This city blends the old and the new, with futuristic skyscrapers and ancient mosques.
On Saturday 2 March, representatives of European Gymnastics and the Local Organising Committee met at Baku’s National Gymnastics Arena to discuss the preparations for this year’s editions of the TeamGym Championships. The Arena has the ability to accommodate from 5,000 to 9,600 spectators. Warm-up and training facilities are collocated within the arena adjacent to the Field of Play.
With many years of experience organising high-level gymnastics events, the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation has a wealth of knowledge. However, TeamGym is a relatively new addition to their portfolio, and it is now an excellent opportunity to move TeamGym out of its natural environment and leave a lasting legacy. This is similar to what happened two years ago in Luxembourg (LUX).
To facilitate Federations early planning for travel, the competition directives were published on 12 February. A further description and a list of the TeamGym equipment will be added as April progresses. Please note that the registration deadline is 16 July.
For federations who have not yet started developing TeamGym, a special VIP event is planned, so they can see first-hand the enthusiasm shown for this gymnastics discipline by the competitors and spectators alike. Further information will follow as we get closer to the event.
The ticket sale will launch in the coming weeks.

A few topics in the TeamGym Code of Points have been clarified for the 2024 European Championships. The updated Revision A, February 2024, has been published and is available to download at https://www.europeangymnastics.com/page/rules.
The Revision A includes all clarifications and corrections made since the publication of the Code of Points in January 2022. This includes the recent clarifications for Floor communicated in January/February 2024.

• Clarifications on Code of Points 2022-2024
Please note that the updates refer to the rules applied at the TeamGym European Championships. For any other national or international competitions please consult your national federation or the competition organiser.
In addition, the Technical Regulations 2024-2025 were updated for all disciplines and is available to download. The updated version came into force on 1 January 2024.

As part of our commitment to providing opportunities for education, we are this year planning for two performance level courses in Floor and Tumble/Trampet. Course venues are still to be decided. Information will be available during April.
Moreover, we also recommend the ABC for Floor which is also available free to download. This educational presentation will help coaches to interpret the TeamGym Code of Points and clarify different concepts in written and visual forms.
The TeamGym TC is already busy working on the Code of Points for the next four-year cycle. Discussions at the TeamGym Conference provided valuable input to this work, and we look forward to support from the community during the preparation phase.
The launch of the new Code is planned for March 2025. To allow for prospective committee candidates to achieve their required category (now Cat 1 or 2) well in advance before the European Gymnastics Congress, two brevet courses will be concluded by July 2025. These courses will be held between May and July 2025 (3 days of face to face with additional online preparation beforehand). Further courses will be organised thereafter to complete the required revalidations. As we get closer, we will announce information on our website and notify all national federations.
