Sydorak (UKR), Atamanov (ISR) and the Azerbaijani group lead on day 1 of Rhythmic Europeans

The first European Gymnastics event of the year kicked off today in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. On the programme today: junior individual qualifications with rope and balls and seniors groups with 5 balls.

6 groups took the carpet to perform their 5 balls routine. Azerbaijan, sporting a beautiful classic look with black leotards and red balls, showed a dramatic choreography to lead on day 1, with half a point over Israel. Estonia and Ukraine both scored 32.000. Estonia advance in third place though due to the tie break rules.

57 juniors gymnasts are competing for one of the spots in the apparatus finals. The top 8 per event qualify but there is a limit of 1 gymnast per country. The host nation Ukraine secured the top spot with rope where Karina Sydorak scored 21.500 ahead of Belarus’ Dina Agisheva and Bulgaria’s Eva Brezalieva. Both Israel’s Daria Atamanov and Polina Karika (UKR) scored a massive 22.650 with ball with Atamanov taking the lead after a tie-breaker. Yelyzaveta Zorkina (BLR) qualified in third place.
