During the first stage of three planned competitions in the inaugural European Gymnastics Online Series in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, 45 participants from 14 countries showed their skills on one or more apparatus, from the comfort of their own gym.
In a trailblazing, new competition format for European Gymnastics, the registered athletes get a timeframe to perform, record and upload their routine. Their work is then judged by a panel of Europe’s best judges, also from the comfort of their own home. And, fans could watch the action unfold on the Elevien app. What’s not to like?
Bulgaria and Croatia both won two titles. For Bulgaria, Eddie Penev was victorious on floor ahead of Aurel Benovic (CRO) and Ioane Jimsheleishvili (GEO), while teammate Yordan Aleksandrov aced his parallel bars routine for the win after the tie with Noe Seifert (SUI) was broken. Romania’s Andrei Muntean placed a close third.
For Croatia, veteran Filip Ude, the Vice-Olympic Champion of Beijing 2008, earned his merits again on his signature event, pommel horse. Ude beat 2020 European Champion Matvei Petrov. Ude’s teammates Marco Sambolec and Liam Rabic went head-to-head for third and fourth place. After placing second on floor, Benovic went all-out for victory on vault, having a comfortable lead over Spain’s Unai Baigorri and Ukraine’s Radomyr Stelmakh.
Armenia’s Vahagn Davtyan and Artur Avetisyan showed their worth on rings, scoring 14.800 and 14.666 respectively for the top two places. Posting the highest difficulty score, Italy’s Salvatore Maresca placed third.
Last but certainly not least, Timo Eder put Germany on the medal table with a stellar horizontal bar routine, scoring 13.500 for the victory. Italy’s Ivan Brunello and Bulgaria’s Yordan Aleksandrov followed closely behind for the last two podium places.
