Welcome to 2020! What an exciting year it is … in just 6 months the Olympic Games open in the Japanese capital Tokyo.
Will Russian twins Dina and Arina Averina continue their domination of this cycle? Or will it be someone else’s chance to shine and break Russia’s winning streak? Linoy Ashram (ISR), Katsiaryna Halkina (BLR), Vlada Nikolchenko (UKR), Alexandra Agiurgiuculese (ITA) for example, are keen to show their talent to the world. And the Japanese group wants to impress on home soil after winning the first ever World title last year but they have to expect stiff competition from Italy, Bulgaria and Russia among others.
While the majority of individuals and groups have already qualified to the Tokyo Olympics, there are two more opportunities to claim that valuable entry ticket: the 2020 World Cup series and the 2020 continental championships. For more info on the Olympic qualifying procedure, check out the FIG website: http://www.gymnastics.sport/site/rules/rules.php
Competition season begins traditionally at the Moscow Grand Prix, the first weekend of February. There, we’ll see the new routines, combinations and readiness of the athletes. The Grand Prix events are followed in quick succession by the World Cup series, and after that the World Challenge Cup series, that consist of four competitions each.
The European Championships will be held in Kyiv’s Palace of Sport. The senior individuals will compete for all-around glory, the senior groups for all-around and apparatus gold and the junior individuals for apparatus medals. Tickets will go on sale in February! Make sure to check our website and social media channels for the latest news.
Aiming to prepare the next generation of stars on their Olympic path, UEG organises its annual training camp in Obertraun (AUT) from 5 to 11 July. All information is available on our website: https://www.ueg.org/event/2020-training-camp-rhythmic-gymnastics/overview
And in August … the most important competition since Rio 2016. On Friday 7 August, the qualification round will be held for individuals. On Saturday 8 August, the groups attempt to qualify for the final and the individuals get to battle for the medals. The Olympic gymnastics competition ends on Sunday 9 August with the final for groups, just before the Closing Ceremony will mark the end of the Games of the 32nd Olympiad.
Wishing all gymnasts and coaches a fair and successful season!
