The Italian coastal resort Rimini is the place to be this week as the 36th European Championships in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics are on the programme in the Fiera di Rimini. On the opening day, the senior men showed their worth in the qualification rounds.
After three exciting subdivisions, the new European All-Around Champion received his crown. Furthermore, the individual apparatus and team finalists are known.
With his eyes firmly set on securing Olympic qualification, Marios Georgiou gave it his all. Starting on vault, the Cypriot scored over 14 points on 4 apparatuses, highlighted by magnificent parallel bars and horizontal routines. Sealing the deal on rings, a total score of 84.265 earned him the gold medal. After the bronze medal in the all-around in 2019, Marios Georgiou can proudly call himself the 2024 European All-Around Champion: “I’m very happy with that today because I think today was the most stressful day of my gymnastics career. To qualify for Paris, it was [such a] difficult and stressful day but at the end of the day, it just went well.” And the icing on the cake … Marios Georgiou earned, pending FIG confirmation, that last available ticket for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. What a fabulous day in the office for the 26-year-old!
On his return to continental Championships, Ukraine’s superstar Oleg Verniaiev did not disappoint. The 2015 and 2017 European Champion hit a delightful pommel horse routine for 15.166, and vaulted to a total of 84.031 to secure the silver medal. He couldn’t quite believe it himself: “I’m so happy. I have two [all-around] golds, and one bronze. Now I have the silver medal so I have all collection.”
The battle bronze went down to the very last rotation, with Krisztofer Meszaros (HUN), the leader after subdivision 1, holding on for a long time. His total score 83.398 earned him the fifth place, with Jake Jarman, last year’s silver medallist, overtaking him for the fourth place. And the bronze medal went to … the home nation Italy, for the fabulous performances of youngster Yumin Abbadini. Already a gold medallist with the team last year, and silver team medallist in 2022, the future shines bright for Abbadini.
Congratulations to the medallists!
