Kevric comfortably defends EYOF all-around title

Today in Maribor, 88 girls from 37 countries competed at the European Youth Olympic Festival. Divided over 4 subdivisions, the qualification results determined both the all-around and team ranking, in addition to the apparatus and mixed team finals qualifiers.

Last year’s sensation, Helen Kevric cruised to victory. Aged 15, the German starlet posted a massive total score of 53.900, leaving no doubt who’s the leading junior of her generation. The defending Champion, and reigning junior European Champion, claimed the highest scores on both vault and bars, second highest on floor and placed third on beam. Not a bad day in the office at all!

Italy’s Sara Caputo matched Kevric’s top score on vault and performed consistently on the other 3 events to clinch the silver medal. Teammate Emma Fioravanti and Great Britain’s Ema Grace Kandalova battled for the bronze medal. Fioravanti earned the top score on floor but lost points on vault, while Kandalova showed less difficulty but was stable throughout. In the end, the judges didn’t differentiate between the two, so both received the bronze medal.

Marlene Gotthardt (GER), Lilou Vaillat (FRA), Alexia Gabriela Vanoaga (ROU) and Vanesa Masova (CZE) round out the top 8.

In the team competition, Italians Caputo and Fioravanti joined efforts with Benedetta Gava. The trio mastered a total score of 104.850, earning the team title 8 tenths ahead of Germany’s Kevric, Gotthardt and Lisa Woetzel. The British team featuring Kandalova, Ellie Lewis and Jemima Taylor, grabbed bronze. France, Switzerland, Romania, Netherlands and Ukraine made the top 8.

Congratulations to the medallists!
