Today it was time for the women to shine at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Banska Bystrica (SVK)!
Competing over 4 subdivisions, the girls looked to qualify to the apparatus finals and to secure their best possible ranking in the all-around and team competitions.
Drawn into the first subdivision, Romania started strongly, hitting most of their routines. Posting a total of 102.950, Sabrina Voinea, Amalia Puflea and Amalia Ghigoarta could be proud. Next came the most difficult part: enduring several hours of waiting for the 4 subdivisions to conclude. Their biggest competition ended up coming from Germany that bounced back from falls on beam in the first rotation to excelling on vault and bars to score 102.500, securing the silver medal for Helen Kevric, Meolie Jauch and Marlene Gotthardt. Italy, represented by July Marano, Arianna Grillo and Martina Pieratti, earned 102.150 for the bronze medal. For Romania, this is the first EYOF team title since 2011! France, Ukraine, Great Britain, Czech Republic and Switzerland round out the top eight.
The all-around hardware was even more tightly fought out. Germany’s Helen Kevric vaulted a double-twising Yurchenko to clinch the title with 51.750, just 1 tenth ahead of Romania’s Puflea whose consistency and precise work earned her the silver medal over France’s Lilou Viallat. Posting the same score, Viallat dropped to third after the tiebreaker but impressed the gymnastics community with her excellent execution, especially on beam where she leads going into the final. Ukraine’s Anna Lashchevska showed off great technique, especially on bars and beam, to finish 4th ahead of Ghigoarta, Elina Grawin (SWE), Jauch and Marano.
