Antalya Sports Hall welcomes the 2023 European Championships in Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics this week. On the programme today, the men’s qualification rounds which also determine the team ranking.
In an action packed last subdivision, Italy, Great Britain, Switzerland and the host nation Türkiye battled it out until the last routine for a place on the podium. Türkiye went all out on rings to move into the temporarily take the lead, only to be outscored by Italy’s consistent floor performance. Yumin Abbadini, Lorenzo Minh Casali, Matteo Levantesi, Marco Lodadio and Mario Macchiati write history … this is the first senior men’s team title for Italy! The Turkish team featuring Adem Asil, Ferhat Arican, Ahmet Onder, Mehmet Ayberk Kosak and Kerem Sener, proudly clinched the silver, equalling their best results obtained three years ago in Mersin. A mere 0,632 separated Great Britain and Switzerland in the fight for bronze with the defending Champions Team GB making it onto the podium.
Ilia Kovtun (UKR) set the standard for the all-around in the first subdivision. The 2020 junior European Champion and 2021 European bronze medallist amassed an impressive total of 85.432, highlighted by an excellent showing on parallel bars. Almost two points ahead of nearest rivals Adem Asil (TUR) with Great Britain’s Jake Jarman in third, the 19-year-old Ukrainian will start Thursday’s all-around final with a clear mission to repeat this performance.
Reigning World Champions Rhys McClenaghan (IRL), Adem Asil (TUR) and Artur Davtyan (ARM) all lead the pack on their respective signature event while Euros debutant Harry Hepworth outscored Olympic Champion Artur Dolgopyat on floor. Double European Champion on parallel bars Ferhat Arican (TUR) posted the highest score there. Italy’s individual gymnast Carlo Macchini excelled on high bar. His 14.233 earned him the top spot today. Of course, all finals start from zero so everyone’s got their work cut out!
