The Federazione Ginnastica d’Italia (FGI) celebrates its 150th anniversary in style

The Italian Gymnastics Federation FGI put on a fabulous display in Venice to celebrate its foundation, in the very same city, in 1869, inviting dignitaries to a splendid gala event at the La Fenice theatre. UEG President Farid Gayibov attended together with FIG President Morinari Watanabe.

The gala showcasted the long and successful history of the federation, featuring European, World and Olympic champions or medallists like Yuri Chechi, Igor Cassina, Matteo Morandi and Marta Pagnini as well as current members of the national team in Rhythmic Gymnastics (Alessia Maurelli, Martina Centofanti, Agnese Duranti, Letizia Cicconcelli, Anna Basta, Martina Santandrea, Beatrice Tornatore, Daniela Mogurean, Laura Paris, Francesca Majer, Milena Baldassarri, Alexandra Agiurgiuculese and Alessia Russo), Women's Artistic (Giorgia Villa, Alice D'Amato, Asia D'Amato, Veronica Mandriota, Alessia Federici, Martina Maggio, Desiree Carofiglio, Irene Lanza, Elisa Iorio, Noemi Linari and Vanessa Ferrari) and Men's Artistic (Marco Lodadio, Nicolò Mozzato, Stefano Patron and Filippo Castellaro). The whole show was broadcast live on the Rai 2 television channel.

During a press conference, at Ca’ Farsetti — part of Venice City Hall —, FGI President Gherardo Tecchi underlined that the gymnastics body is the oldest Italian sporting federation recognised by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).

This is a memorable day for us. When the gymnastics federation was founded, it embraced many disciplines, from football to swimming. We have continued with our mission, developing the pedagogical value, starting with the schools and their famous 'gymnastic hour'. We continue to work in schools as well as in competition, and we can boast of champions that have written the history of our Federation. It is an honour for me to be its president, especially in this 150th anniversary year.
