Azerbaijan claims 2 European titles on day 3 of #TRA2024

On the programme in the Multiusos of Guimaraes today: day 3 of the 29th European Championships in Trampoline, Double Mini-Trampoline and Tumbling.

The juniors started off the day with their synchro qualifications, followed by the team finals for seniors in DMT and Tumbling and the junior synchro finals.

With 6 European titles at stake, only Azerbaijan managed to win more than one. The other 4 titles all went to different countries, showcasing the strength of the European Trampoline community.

Host nation Portugal took the first gold of the day as Matilde Oliveira, Alexandra Garcia, Diana Gago and Ines Martins aced their DMT routines to beat Great Britain featuring Kirsty Way, Ruth Shevelan, Bethany Williamson and Molly McKenna, by a point. World Champion Melania Rodriguez led Spain to the bronze medal over Germany.

All eyes were on Azerbaijan’s male tumblers, the reigning World Champions. Featuring big names like Mikhail Malkin and Tofiq Aliyev, Azerbaijan seems to have found the golden formula to produce world-class tumblers, all courtesy of head coach Adil Huseyn-Zada. Their total of 14 outscored Great Britain, where class acts William Cowen, Jaydon Paddock and Kristof Willerton performed their daring routines, by 2 points. Portugal and Denmark went head-to-head in the battle for the bronze with the host nation edging past their rivals, and Ukraine placing fifth.

Under loud support of their teammates, the Spanish men David Franco, Nuno Villafane and Andres Martins all performed passes that scored more than 28 points each to win the European title in DMT, edging host Portugal who had top-notch performances by Tiago Sampaio Romao and Diogo Cabral. Germany’s Adrian Thomson, Hannes Koenig and Daniel Schmidt cruised to third place ahead of Great Britain and Finland.

In the tumbling women’s team final, the highest score of this final came courtesy of European and World Champion Candy Briere-Vetillard, taking her French team into the silver medal position. However, Great Britain had the most consistent performance over all three gymnasts. Naana Oppon and Megan Kealy both won their round, Comfort Yeates placed second. So victory goes to Great Britain! The Belgian ladies Tachina Peeters, Evi Milh and Louise Vanregenmortel tied the Portuguese team. The higher difficulty decided the bronze medallist .. Belgium!

Georgia and Azerbaijan won the 2 junior synchro titles, with Maia Bochoridze and Ana Lapiashvili (GEO) prevailing in the girls final whereas Ali Niftaliyev and Ammar Bakhshaliyev (AZE) conquered the boys gold.
