At the World Cup stage in Szombathely, strict health regulations were in place allowing the gymnasts to participate in the first major international competition since March. After months of lockdown and restricted training, the return to a hint of normality was welcomed.
In the men’s competition, 6 men claimed gold. Slovenia’s Rok Klavora won the gold on his speciality floor while 2014 junior European Champion Vinzenz Hoeck won Austria’s first World Cup gold ever for his performance on rings. Igor Radivilov (UKR) vaulted to victory with teammate Petro Pakhniuk taking the title on parallel bars. Croatia’s Tin Srbic showed his class on high bar again.
The women’s finals saw the much-anticipated return of 2018 European Champion on vault Boglarka Devai. The Hungarian star has been sidelined by injury since then but looked eager to be back as she vaulted a double twisting Yurchenko and a Lopez for the victory. Anastasia Motak (silver on vault) Diana Varinska (gold on bars) and Angelina Radivilova (gold on floor, bronze on vault) continued Ukraine’s success while Christina Zwicker won her first World Cup title as she beat Elina Vihrova (LAT) and Aneta Holasova (CZE). for the beam crown.
Poland’s star Marta Pihan-Kulesza debuted a new floor routine, to Madonna’s ‘Vogue’, which included a quintuple spin to illusion. She was rewarded with the silver medal and lots of praise in the gymnastics community.
