The junior gymnasts took to the stage today at Mersin’s Gymnastics Hall as they looked to battle for the all-around and team medals and to secure a place in Sunday’s apparatus finals.
Romanian junior Ana Barbosu dominated the competition, posting a massive 54.599 in the all-around for an easy victory and qualifying to each apparatus finals in first place. Teammates Maria Ceplinschi and Iulia Trestianu placed second and third in the all-around. The bronze medal went, however, to Ukraine’s Daniela Batrona due to the 2-per-country rule. The combined effort of the Romanian girls secured the team title quite easily, with a whopping 10 points advantage over Ukraine. Apart from Barbosu, the Romanian team qualified Maria Ceplinschi (vault and floor), Iulia Trestianu (bars) and Andreea Preda to beam finals. Ukraine will be represented on Sunday by Daria Lyska (vault, beam and floor) Daniela Batrona (bars and floor) and Iulia Kasianenko (beam).
The team from Hungary clinch the bronze medal and Kira Balazs (vault), Anna Szmirnov (bars) and Greta Mayer (beam and floor) all advance to finals. Croatia’s Sara Sulekic qualified to vault, bars and floor finals while Tara Vella Clark of Malta wrote history with her 4th place on beam.
Congratulations to the medallists!
