5th Artistic Gymnastics ECh in Moscow : 1st day of qualifications

The competition started today with the men’s qualifications

Competition I allows the gymnasts to battle out at the same time who continues to the all-round competition and the apparatus finals. The level shown today gave a very promising first impression, some months after the London Olympic Games.

The two teams that impressed today are Great-Britain and Ukraine.

The young British Max Whitlock, 20 years old, ends up as the top qualifier for the all-round competition.

Clearly in good shape, he also takes the lead of the competition on floor and finishes second on pommel horse.

Apart from Whitlock, the British really gave their best today and will have to confirm their performances during the finals this weekend.

The current qualifier podium on pommel horse already looks like a final podium with 3 Olympic medal winners in the lead of these qualifications, the Olympic Champion occupying the first provisional rank.

Noteworthy on rings, are the two French qualified for the finals; a come-back for Samir AIT SAID who returns after an injury that occurred at the 2012 ECh in Montpellier. Let’s recall that he had finished second on vault during the ECh in Berlin in 2011 behind his teammate Thomas Bouhail, who retired from competition following a bad injury.

Find all qualified gymnasts for the all-around competition and the apparatus finals in the result section on the page of the event.

The competition continues tomorrow with the WAG qualifications.
